Narrative:

After making contact with acy approach control we requested a straight-in to runway 13. Runway 31 was the advertised runway in use on the ATIS. The WX was clear (about 5 mi visibility) and the winds were nearly calm. Approach advised that we would probably not get runway 13 due to inbound traffic from the north. We continued for runway 31. We were approaching from the west. Approximately 5 mi from the airport we were informed that 13 would be available. We were told to continue on a 040 degree heading and to contact tower. Tower cleared us for the visibility approach and cleared us to land on runway 13. At about 1 mi from the runway I could see an aircraft on final for runway 22. Tower called and said that he would have to have the small aircraft go around since there was not enough clearance for us to land safely on the crossing runways. I acknowledged his call and could see that 1 of us would have to go around in order to avoid a collision. Tower told the small aircraft to go around and there was no response. Tower again told the small aircraft to go around and there still was no response. Just a few ft from T/D and with the light aircraft continuing his approach I took control of the aircraft (my first officer was flying) and performed a go around using maximum available power and maximum pitch. Just after I started my go around I heard the small aircraft reply to the tower and he too started a go around. We established ourselves on a visibility downwind and were reclred to land. After landing we phoned the tower to discuss the incident. I told him I was just relieved that no one was hurt. He told me that his planning would have had the small aircraft T/D before us and clear our runway well before our landing, but that the small aircraft approach speed decreased significantly. The small aircraft pilot later said that he only heard the tower's go around call after what really was the third call. He did not see us since we were landing out of the sun. The small aircraft crew was a student and instrument. Again this only goes to show the need for constant vigilance. I have no idea how close we passed to the small aircraft on the go around, but it was probably close enough to warrant a near miss report.

Title: ACR ON VISUAL APCH EXECUTES A GO AROUND DUE TO SMA LNDG ON INTERSECTING RWY. SMA DOES GO AROUND AS WELL, CREATING LESS THAN STANDARD SEPARATION.

Narrative: AFTER MAKING CONTACT WITH ACY APCH CTL WE REQUESTED A STRAIGHT-IN TO RWY 13. RWY 31 WAS THE ADVERTISED RWY IN USE ON THE ATIS. THE WX WAS CLR (ABOUT 5 MI VISIBILITY) AND THE WINDS WERE NEARLY CALM. APCH ADVISED THAT WE WOULD PROBABLY NOT GET RWY 13 DUE TO INBND TFC FROM THE N. WE CONTINUED FOR RWY 31. WE WERE APCHING FROM THE W. APPROX 5 MI FROM THE ARPT WE WERE INFORMED THAT 13 WOULD BE AVAILABLE. WE WERE TOLD TO CONTINUE ON A 040 DEG HDG AND TO CONTACT TWR. TWR CLRED US FOR THE VIS APCH AND CLRED US TO LAND ON RWY 13. AT ABOUT 1 MI FROM THE RWY I COULD SEE AN ACFT ON FINAL FOR RWY 22. TWR CALLED AND SAID THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO HAVE THE SMA GO AROUND SINCE THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH CLRNC FOR US TO LAND SAFELY ON THE XING RWYS. I ACKNOWLEDGED HIS CALL AND COULD SEE THAT 1 OF US WOULD HAVE TO GO AROUND IN ORDER TO AVOID A COLLISION. TWR TOLD THE SMA TO GO AROUND AND THERE WAS NO RESPONSE. TWR AGAIN TOLD THE SMA TO GO AROUND AND THERE STILL WAS NO RESPONSE. JUST A FEW FT FROM T/D AND WITH THE LIGHT ACFT CONTINUING HIS APCH I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT (MY F/O WAS FLYING) AND PERFORMED A GAR USING MAX AVAILABLE PWR AND MAX PITCH. JUST AFTER I STARTED MY GAR I HEARD THE SMA REPLY TO THE TWR AND HE TOO STARTED A GAR. WE ESTABLISHED OURSELVES ON A VIS DOWNWIND AND WERE RECLRED TO LAND. AFTER LNDG WE PHONED THE TWR TO DISCUSS THE INCIDENT. I TOLD HIM I WAS JUST RELIEVED THAT NO ONE WAS HURT. HE TOLD ME THAT HIS PLANNING WOULD HAVE HAD THE SMA T/D BEFORE US AND CLR OUR RWY WELL BEFORE OUR LNDG, BUT THAT THE SMA APCH SPD DECREASED SIGNIFICANTLY. THE SMA PLT LATER SAID THAT HE ONLY HEARD THE TWR'S GAR CALL AFTER WHAT REALLY WAS THE THIRD CALL. HE DID NOT SEE US SINCE WE WERE LNDG OUT OF THE SUN. THE SMA CREW WAS A STUDENT AND INSTR. AGAIN THIS ONLY GOES TO SHOW THE NEED FOR CONSTANT VIGILANCE. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW CLOSE WE PASSED TO THE SMA ON THE GAR, BUT IT WAS PROBABLY CLOSE ENOUGH TO WARRANT A NEAR MISS RPT.
