Narrative:

After landing on runway 28R at sfo we cleared the runway at taxiway T and were instructed to cross 28L and join T and then D. We were currently on T as we began to cross the runway. I didn't realize that to join D the turn needed to be done on the crossing runway. We completed the crossing of runway 28L on T and missed the turn onto D. We cleared 28L; still on T; and called ground. There was an aircraft under tow on B that was instructed to give way to us and we were instructed to join taxiway a and proceed to the ramp without incident. This is a very confusing intersection that combined with the location of taxiway signage made the instructions that we were given very difficult to understand. I think that better taxi planning and better ATC verbiage could help to prevent this confusion in the future.
