Narrative:

I am a CFI. A student of mine was cleared to taxi to the active runway, but hold short of another runway. When he was cleared to cross the runway, a miscom occurred. He crossed the active runway instead of taxiing to it. At that time an aircraft was on short final, and was barely able to get the aircraft to go around. If my student had repeated his clearance back to ground control the confusion in his head may have been cleared up before the near disaster. Communications cannot be stressed enough.
