Narrative:
I had entered left downwind, as directed, to runway 13L when I heard a plane report in over the kingdome (north). He was directed by the tower to enter straight in runway 13L. When I reached the north end of the runway I asked the tower if I was to extend my downwind. I received no reply. A short time later I inquired about the traffic straight in on runway 13L and got no reply. After an extended downwind I turned base and final. When on short final, the other aircraft appeared in front of me by less than 100' and less than 100' below. I pulled up and left of the runway while calling the tower telling them they had 2 aircraft on short final runway 13L. The tower instructed me to 'turn right and head southeast'--a rather confusing combination to say the least. After my second approach and landing the tower apologized for the confusion.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: 2 ACFT CAME VERY CLOSE TO A MIDAIR COLLISION WHILE LNDG.
Narrative: I HAD ENTERED LEFT DOWNWIND, AS DIRECTED, TO RWY 13L WHEN I HEARD A PLANE RPT IN OVER THE KINGDOME (N). HE WAS DIRECTED BY THE TWR TO ENTER STRAIGHT IN RWY 13L. WHEN I REACHED THE N END OF THE RWY I ASKED THE TWR IF I WAS TO EXTEND MY DOWNWIND. I RECEIVED NO REPLY. A SHORT TIME LATER I INQUIRED ABOUT THE TFC STRAIGHT IN ON RWY 13L AND GOT NO REPLY. AFTER AN EXTENDED DOWNWIND I TURNED BASE AND FINAL. WHEN ON SHORT FINAL, THE OTHER ACFT APPEARED IN FRONT OF ME BY LESS THAN 100' AND LESS THAN 100' BELOW. I PULLED UP AND LEFT OF THE RWY WHILE CALLING THE TWR TELLING THEM THEY HAD 2 ACFT ON SHORT FINAL RWY 13L. THE TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO 'TURN RIGHT AND HEAD SE'--A RATHER CONFUSING COMBINATION TO SAY THE LEAST. AFTER MY SECOND APCH AND LNDG THE TWR APOLOGIZED FOR THE CONFUSION.
