Narrative:
Briefed relief crew (shift change) that we received oceanic cpdlc [controller-pilot data link communication] to cross zzzzz at FL360. [ATC] would not let us climb to FL360 to comply with oceanic. Sent message to oceanic and they said no worries; that they would climb us after zzzzz. I left cockpit to go on break; upon returning from break; first officers told me that they received a cpdlc message to climb to FL360 but called oceanic to confirm and they said to maintain FL320. First officers then contacted oceanic because he was the one generating the cpdlc messages and he said to maintain FL320.
