Narrative:
I was pushed back from the gate at btv onto the confined ramp area and partly on to the taxiway. The tow bar was disconnected and clearance was received to start engines. A 'disconnect' was given to the pushback crew and engine start was commenced. #1 engine was started and as I was preparing to release the ground crew, an arriving medium large transport aircraft taxied from behind and between myself and the gate area toward his gate, a very confined space. I interrupted the start of #2 engine and switched to ground control to inquire if the medium large transport aircraft had clearance to taxi around us. The reply from ground was that they didn't control the ramp area. My reply was that I thought it was not a very safe practice and I didn't appreciate it as it put my ground crew at risk. The medium large transport flight then followed with remarks and profanity that might be more appropriate to a circuit breaker radio but hardly acceptable on ground control. The ramp area at btv is not very large. When an aircraft is pushed back and partly blocks the taxiway there is not a lot of room on the ramp between the taxiway and the jetways and ramp equipment. At night, as this was, it is very hard to see personnel on the ramp from an aircraft. With attention given by the ground crew to engine start and salute after release, they could very easily walk into a taxiing aircraft. As far as the profanity from the medium large transport flight crew it was completely uncalled for and very unprofessional. It showed a complete lack of radio discipline. The maneuver to taxi across the ramp also showed a lack of concern for the safe handling of an aircraft on the ground and of the safety of the personnel working there.

Title: REPORTER VERBALLY OBJECTED TO CAPT OF ARRIVING MLG TAXIING BEHIND HIM WHILE HE WAS STARTING ENGINES.
Narrative: I WAS PUSHED BACK FROM THE GATE AT BTV ONTO THE CONFINED RAMP AREA AND PARTLY ON TO THE TXWY. THE TOW BAR WAS DISCONNECTED AND CLRNC WAS RECEIVED TO START ENGS. A 'DISCONNECT' WAS GIVEN TO THE PUSHBACK CREW AND ENG START WAS COMMENCED. #1 ENG WAS STARTED AND AS I WAS PREPARING TO RELEASE THE GND CREW, AN ARRIVING MLG ACFT TAXIED FROM BEHIND AND BTWN MYSELF AND THE GATE AREA TOWARD HIS GATE, A VERY CONFINED SPACE. I INTERRUPTED THE START OF #2 ENG AND SWITCHED TO GND CTL TO INQUIRE IF THE MLG ACFT HAD CLRNC TO TAXI AROUND US. THE REPLY FROM GND WAS THAT THEY DIDN'T CTL THE RAMP AREA. MY REPLY WAS THAT I THOUGHT IT WAS NOT A VERY SAFE PRACTICE AND I DIDN'T APPRECIATE IT AS IT PUT MY GND CREW AT RISK. THE MLG FLT THEN FOLLOWED WITH REMARKS AND PROFANITY THAT MIGHT BE MORE APPROPRIATE TO A CB RADIO BUT HARDLY ACCEPTABLE ON GND CTL. THE RAMP AREA AT BTV IS NOT VERY LARGE. WHEN AN ACFT IS PUSHED BACK AND PARTLY BLOCKS THE TXWY THERE IS NOT A LOT OF ROOM ON THE RAMP BTWN THE TXWY AND THE JETWAYS AND RAMP EQUIP. AT NIGHT, AS THIS WAS, IT IS VERY HARD TO SEE PERSONNEL ON THE RAMP FROM AN ACFT. WITH ATTN GIVEN BY THE GND CREW TO ENG START AND SALUTE AFTER RELEASE, THEY COULD VERY EASILY WALK INTO A TAXIING ACFT. AS FAR AS THE PROFANITY FROM THE MLG FLC IT WAS COMPLETELY UNCALLED FOR AND VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. IT SHOWED A COMPLETE LACK OF RADIO DISCIPLINE. THE MANEUVER TO TAXI ACROSS THE RAMP ALSO SHOWED A LACK OF CONCERN FOR THE SAFE HANDLING OF AN ACFT ON THE GND AND OF THE SAFETY OF THE PERSONNEL WORKING THERE.
