Narrative:
Piper J-3 was on a ferry flight direct ZZZ VFR without a radio due to technical troubles. The cub was going to enter a final for runway xx at ZZZ however noticed an aircraft at the hold-short of yy [intersecting runway] and decided to enter a 45 for a right downwind yy. The pilot fixated on the cessna at the hold-short and didn't clear final prior to making the base turn.beechcraft baron was on a final approach to runway yy trying to hail the cub over the radio. Piper J-3 was on right base for runway yy with no radio due to technical failures when noticed [the] beech baron on short final. The J-3 was not visual [with] the baron until noticing the baron was taking evasive action to avoid collision. Piper cub took evasive action to the left departing the pattern before returning to the airfield.there were many human factors going on with the pilot of the piper J-3. The pilot was rushing back to ZZZ to get in his car and meet his wife at the hospital. With these factors it must have drove his attention elsewhere and broke down his visual scan for other aircraft.to mitigate this in the future it is imperative that pilots evaluate themselves with some sort of imsafe checklist to make sure they are good to fly. Even though the pilot thought he was good to fly it was evident his mind was elsewhere and he was 'not safe' almost causing a terrible accident.
