Narrative:
Normal taxi out to the runway. Current conditions where cloudy and windy and LLWS advisory in effect. Planned on making full power takeoff due to LLWS. We took off on runway xx first fix RNAV to zzzzz on the SID with the LNAV armed. After we took off the flight was bumpy until passing 13000 ft and then it smoothed out. We did our after takeoff checklist just after passing 10000 ft. At around 13000 ft we switched to center and gave us further climb to FL230 and cleared us direct to ZZZZZ1. Once we were about to level off at FL230 indy center gave us another climb to FL280. At about FL232 I started to smell an unusual smell in the cockpit and I asked my captain if he was smelling the same odor; but he didn't notice anything at the time. We also had an off line jumpseater occupying the observer seat and I turned to ask him if he was smelling an odor and at that time I could see smoke haze in the cockpit and I immediately told the captain of smoke in the cockpit. All 3 of us immediately don our oxygen masks on and I notified center of our condition and notified ATC and requested an immediate return to ZZZ and they gave us a left turn direct to ZZZ airport and a descent to 11000 ft. The captain asked me to run the QRH for smoke; fire or fumes while he was flying the aircraft. He also asked the jumpseater if he can locate the source of smoke and he went to the gallery area; but was not able to point out the source. In the mean time I was running the checklist and also talking on the radio and just before coming up on item 9 on the QRH the jumpseater suggested to turn the utility busses and the captain did so and I confirmed that was the next step to do so. I also was helping the captain to get the current weather in ZZZ and programming the FMC for an ILS runway xx; tuning the localizer frequency and getting landing speed for flaps 25 landing. I finished with the QRH and we were getting radar vectors with ZZZ approach and to join the localizer. Just prior [to] crossing the final approach fix we were fully configured and ran the landing checklist and told to contact tower and we did so and landed safely and were met with the crash fire rescue equipment just exiting runway and stopped. There was no injuries. We did everything by our standards; but I should've transferred the radios when the captain asked for the QRH so I could've ran the QRH quicker and more efficient and did the descent and approach checklist; but had a lot going on and we just wanted to get the aircraft on the ground quickly and safely.
