Narrative:
Climbing out of detroit metropolitan on the published SID (metropolitan 4), I was accelerating from 250 KTS passing 290 KTS when ZOB asked our speed. I had asked the first officer twice about the usual restriction of 250 KTS until advised, and he assured me that we hadn't been issued that clearance. We informed the controller, who then advised that the 250 KT restriction was on the published SID. We were given a right 90 degree turn and slowed to 250 KTS. Before completing the turn, I had slowed and informed ATC. He turned me back on course with no conflicts (I called the supervisor to confirm this upon landing). I had the SID clipped on the yoke and the 250 KT speed on departure was one of the notes. This type of clearance is used by ATC often with out being published on a particular SID. I had reviewed the SID and missed the note. Perhaps this could be standardized by ATC from region to region? The controller caught our mistake and corrected it prior to a conflict, but maybe this could be avoided with a more uniform policy across the country.

Title: ACR MLG ACCELERATED ABOVE 250 KTS AFTER LEAVING 10000'. DTW SID HAS A NOTE RESTRICTING THE SPEED TO 250 KTS UNTIL ADVISED.
Narrative: CLBING OUT OF DETROIT METRO ON THE PUBLISHED SID (METRO 4), I WAS ACCELERATING FROM 250 KTS PASSING 290 KTS WHEN ZOB ASKED OUR SPD. I HAD ASKED THE F/O TWICE ABOUT THE USUAL RESTRICTION OF 250 KTS UNTIL ADVISED, AND HE ASSURED ME THAT WE HADN'T BEEN ISSUED THAT CLRNC. WE INFORMED THE CTLR, WHO THEN ADVISED THAT THE 250 KT RESTRICTION WAS ON THE PUBLISHED SID. WE WERE GIVEN A RIGHT 90 DEG TURN AND SLOWED TO 250 KTS. BEFORE COMPLETING THE TURN, I HAD SLOWED AND INFORMED ATC. HE TURNED ME BACK ON COURSE WITH NO CONFLICTS (I CALLED THE SUPVR TO CONFIRM THIS UPON LNDG). I HAD THE SID CLIPPED ON THE YOKE AND THE 250 KT SPD ON DEP WAS ONE OF THE NOTES. THIS TYPE OF CLRNC IS USED BY ATC OFTEN WITH OUT BEING PUBLISHED ON A PARTICULAR SID. I HAD REVIEWED THE SID AND MISSED THE NOTE. PERHAPS THIS COULD BE STANDARDIZED BY ATC FROM REGION TO REGION? THE CTLR CAUGHT OUR MISTAKE AND CORRECTED IT PRIOR TO A CONFLICT, BUT MAYBE THIS COULD BE AVOIDED WITH A MORE UNIFORM POLICY ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
