Narrative:
I departed phx to pdx and sea with an inoperative flight data recorder. The activation switch had been removed during installation of the TCAS system and had not been replaced. I inadvertently missed the switch during my preflight set-up.

Title: FLT CREW OF AIR CARRIER MLG FLEW FLT WITHOUT FLT DATA RECORDER BEING OPERATIVE.
Narrative: I DEPARTED PHX TO PDX AND SEA WITH AN INOPERATIVE FLT DATA RECORDER. THE ACTIVATION SWITCH HAD BEEN REMOVED DURING INSTALLATION OF THE TCAS SYSTEM AND HAD NOT BEEN REPLACED. I INADVERTENTLY MISSED THE SWITCH DURING MY PREFLT SET-UP.
