Narrative:

I am the captain of a corporate light transport X. I received an IFR clearance from gainesville tower to climb to an initial altitude of 2000' MSL. I wrote down 2000' and I may have read back 2000'. The tower called to give me my clearance while I was in the middle of my cockpit checklist. I was busy in my preflight duties and I, by mistake, set an incorrect altitude of 5000' in the altimeter preselect on the instrument panel. We taxied in heavy ground fog (tops at 600') and my attention was directed to the checklist, the limited visibility, and the fact we had to back taxi on the runway because the tower changed the departure runway from 10 to 28. We departed and climbed to 5000' and leveled in VFR conditions. Jacksonville departure control questioned my altitude and I told him I believed we were cleared to 5000' and we were level at 5000'. The controller then cleared us to 10000' and we reported leaving 5000' for a climb to 10000'. The next jacksonville controller then gave us a phone number to call jax center when we landed. I called twice the same day and they did not have any information except to say they were reviewing the tapes.

Title: ALT OVERSHOOT IN CLIMB FOR CPR LTT DUE MISSET ALT PRESELECT.

Narrative: I AM THE CAPT OF A CORPORATE LTT X. I RECEIVED AN IFR CLRNC FROM GAINESVILLE TWR TO CLB TO AN INITIAL ALT OF 2000' MSL. I WROTE DOWN 2000' AND I MAY HAVE READ BACK 2000'. THE TWR CALLED TO GIVE ME MY CLRNC WHILE I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF MY COCKPIT CHKLIST. I WAS BUSY IN MY PREFLT DUTIES AND I, BY MISTAKE, SET AN INCORRECT ALT OF 5000' IN THE ALTIMETER PRESELECT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. WE TAXIED IN HVY GND FOG (TOPS AT 600') AND MY ATTN WAS DIRECTED TO THE CHKLIST, THE LIMITED VISIBILITY, AND THE FACT WE HAD TO BACK TAXI ON THE RWY BECAUSE THE TWR CHANGED THE DEP RWY FROM 10 TO 28. WE DEPARTED AND CLBED TO 5000' AND LEVELED IN VFR CONDITIONS. JACKSONVILLE DEP CTL QUESTIONED MY ALT AND I TOLD HIM I BELIEVED WE WERE CLRED TO 5000' AND WE WERE LEVEL AT 5000'. THE CTLR THEN CLRED US TO 10000' AND WE RPTED LEAVING 5000' FOR A CLB TO 10000'. THE NEXT JACKSONVILLE CTLR THEN GAVE US A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL JAX CTR WHEN WE LANDED. I CALLED TWICE THE SAME DAY AND THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY INFO EXCEPT TO SAY THEY WERE REVIEWING THE TAPES.
