Narrative:
Taxiing out to runway 21C, apparently thinking and looking at runway 21L. Xed hold short line for runway 21C. First officer said something and we stopped. Did not enter runway. Advised ground control and they said to contact tower and hold short. Contacted tower after aircraft on final landed, cleared across runway 21C to runway 21L and cleared for takeoff. Could have been prevented with better markings, no sign seen, and clrer thinking on my part. This type of occurrence is still with us because of inadequate markings of peculiar phraseology from airport to airport.

Title: ACR TAXIS PAST HOLD LINE. STOPS SHORT OF RWY.
Narrative: TAXIING OUT TO RWY 21C, APPARENTLY THINKING AND LOOKING AT RWY 21L. XED HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 21C. F/O SAID SOMETHING AND WE STOPPED. DID NOT ENTER RWY. ADVISED GND CTL AND THEY SAID TO CONTACT TWR AND HOLD SHORT. CONTACTED TWR AFTER ACFT ON FINAL LANDED, CLRED ACROSS RWY 21C TO RWY 21L AND CLRED FOR TKOF. COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED WITH BETTER MARKINGS, NO SIGN SEEN, AND CLRER THINKING ON MY PART. THIS TYPE OF OCCURRENCE IS STILL WITH US BECAUSE OF INADEQUATE MARKINGS OF PECULIAR PHRASEOLOGY FROM ARPT TO ARPT.
