Narrative:
En route flight from pia to stl with stl approach...approach calls traffic, opp direction, 12 O'clock (and 4 mi as my first officer remembered). Altitude indicating 6900'. The first officer is flying and we both look out, I see traffic at approximately 11:30, well away, and say to the first officer '...well,...I have traffic way off in the distance at about 12 (O'clock)...' he says, '...no,...this is him right here (points out windscreen).' I look and, yes, there is a twin at our 12 O'clock. Now ATC calls and says, '...traffic 12 O'clock, less than a mi (and climbing I remember), 6900' indicated...' I'm watching a twin small aircraft right out my front window . The first officer still flying is not evading this traffic in anyway. I pulled back very hard on the yoke/wheel and we leveled off at altitude plus 1000' (8000' MSL) and then started a descent back to 7000' and reported a near miss. One thing I found interesting, when talking with my first officer and others subsequent to this event, when this happens, I/we thought there was no way that that aircraft was coming towards us; we both were certain it was going in our same direction.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLOSE PROX COMMUTER-LTT GA-SMA ON ARWY V69 SOUTH OF CAP.
Narrative: ENRTE FLT FROM PIA TO STL WITH STL APCH...APCH CALLS TFC, OPP DIRECTION, 12 O'CLOCK (AND 4 MI AS MY F/O REMEMBERED). ALT INDICATING 6900'. THE F/O IS FLYING AND WE BOTH LOOK OUT, I SEE TFC AT APPROX 11:30, WELL AWAY, AND SAY TO THE F/O '...WELL,...I HAVE TFC WAY OFF IN THE DISTANCE AT ABOUT 12 (O'CLOCK)...' HE SAYS, '...NO,...THIS IS HIM R HERE (POINTS OUT WINDSCREEN).' I LOOK AND, YES, THERE IS A TWIN AT OUR 12 O'CLOCK. NOW ATC CALLS AND SAYS, '...TFC 12 O'CLOCK, LESS THAN A MI (AND CLBING I REMEMBER), 6900' INDICATED...' I'M WATCHING A TWIN SMA R OUT MY FRONT WINDOW . THE F/O STILL FLYING IS NOT EVADING THIS TFC IN ANYWAY. I PULLED BACK VERY HARD ON THE YOKE/WHEEL AND WE LEVELED OFF AT ALT PLUS 1000' (8000' MSL) AND THEN STARTED A DSNT BACK TO 7000' AND RPTED A NEAR MISS. ONE THING I FOUND INTERESTING, WHEN TALKING WITH MY F/O AND OTHERS SUBSEQUENT TO THIS EVENT, WHEN THIS HAPPENS, I/WE THOUGHT THERE WAS NO WAY THAT THAT ACFT WAS COMING TOWARDS US; WE BOTH WERE CERTAIN IT WAS GOING IN OUR SAME DIRECTION.
