Narrative:
1st flight new factory lycoming io-540-d4a5 in RV10. Informed tower of 1st engine run & requested staying in 'D' airspace at 3;500 ft. They approved for delta space on north side of [the airspace]. After 2 spins around circuit engine shook; smoke & oil came from cowling on pilot side. Informed tower engine quit & they cleared xxl for landing. I shut down engine and electrical to prevent possible fire & made emergency landing dead stick. Upon towing back to hangar found large hole in case above #6 cylinder destroying engine.
