Narrative:
After doing touch and go's; my CFI and I departed the pattern to the east to return home. After our final touch and go a grumman S-2T took off behind us. Immediately after departing the delta airspace and changing frequencies the aircraft overtook us on our right side. I remember being able to clearly read the letters on the side of the aircraft. It is unclear if the aircraft ever had visual on us; however; we were never warned of a potential traffic conflict by tower. This may have been avoided by better situational awareness of the traffic in the area and of what is being said on the radios.
