Narrative:
At FL330 right engine oil pressure gauge rapidly and intermittently fluctuated. Oil temperature normal. Engine INS remained normal. After 5 mins of fluctuations red low oil pressure light flickered on. The right engine was shut down as a precaution. Local area WX below was IFR and airports were unfamiliar. The decision to continue was made on the following conditions: known malfunction, precautionary shutdown, WX and airport information indicated continued flight to familiar VFR conditions airport was warranted, and PNF provided continuous emergency landing sites from time of shutdown to time of landing at teb. Descent from FL330 to FL270 single engine service ceiling occurred prior to receiving clearance for descent, but after request for descent. At 32600' controller gave descent clearance to FL270. The rate of airspeed loss at time of shutdown was greater than anticipated. We probably should have requested descent prior to precautionary shutdown.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CPR SMT INFLT ENGINE SHUTDOWN AND ALT DEVIATION EXCURSION FROM CLRNC ALT.
Narrative: AT FL330 RIGHT ENG OIL PRESSURE GAUGE RAPIDLY AND INTERMITTENTLY FLUCTUATED. OIL TEMP NORMAL. ENG INS REMAINED NORMAL. AFTER 5 MINS OF FLUCTUATIONS RED LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT FLICKERED ON. THE RIGHT ENG WAS SHUT DOWN AS A PRECAUTION. LCL AREA WX BELOW WAS IFR AND ARPTS WERE UNFAMILIAR. THE DECISION TO CONTINUE WAS MADE ON THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS: KNOWN MALFUNCTION, PRECAUTIONARY SHUTDOWN, WX AND ARPT INFO INDICATED CONTINUED FLT TO FAMILIAR VFR CONDITIONS ARPT WAS WARRANTED, AND PNF PROVIDED CONTINUOUS EMER LNDG SITES FROM TIME OF SHUTDOWN TO TIME OF LNDG AT TEB. DSNT FROM FL330 TO FL270 SINGLE ENG SVC CEILING OCCURRED PRIOR TO RECEIVING CLRNC FOR DSNT, BUT AFTER REQUEST FOR DSNT. AT 32600' CTLR GAVE DSNT CLRNC TO FL270. THE RATE OF AIRSPD LOSS AT TIME OF SHUTDOWN WAS GREATER THAN ANTICIPATED. WE PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE REQUESTED DSNT PRIOR TO PRECAUTIONARY SHUTDOWN.
