Narrative:
While taxiing to runway 25R at lax, tower cleared us to hold short of runway 25R. I acknowledged. Captain then ordered #3 engine to be started. As copilot, I was busy starting #3 engine and also the after start checklist. I suddenly realized the captain was taxiing onto runway 25R, and I challenged him as to why he was when we were only cleared to hold short. With the aircraft approximately 1/2 on runway, I immediately asked tower for clearance off the active. Tower said that it was ok, and then gave us clearance to taxi into position and hold. Shortly thereafter we were cleared for takeoff. I attribute this occurrence to the fact that both I and the F/east were busy doing other things (starting #3 engine) when we should have been observing outside and listening to what was going on around us. I obviously thought the captain had understood the clearance, when apparently he had not. Supplemental information from acn 164558: lax tower cleared us to continue taxiing for use of full length of 25R, and gave us other instructions which I did not comprehend. As we approached the takeoff end of 25R, I asked the copilot if we were cleared into position and hold. He said yes.

Title: FAILED TO HOLD SHORT RWY 25R.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING TO RWY 25R AT LAX, TWR CLRED US TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 25R. I ACKNOWLEDGED. CAPT THEN ORDERED #3 ENG TO BE STARTED. AS COPLT, I WAS BUSY STARTING #3 ENG AND ALSO THE AFTER START CHKLIST. I SUDDENLY REALIZED THE CAPT WAS TAXIING ONTO RWY 25R, AND I CHALLENGED HIM AS TO WHY HE WAS WHEN WE WERE ONLY CLRED TO HOLD SHORT. WITH THE ACFT APPROX 1/2 ON RWY, I IMMEDIATELY ASKED TWR FOR CLRNC OFF THE ACTIVE. TWR SAID THAT IT WAS OK, AND THEN GAVE US CLRNC TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD. SHORTLY THEREAFTER WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. I ATTRIBUTE THIS OCCURRENCE TO THE FACT THAT BOTH I AND THE F/E WERE BUSY DOING OTHER THINGS (STARTING #3 ENG) WHEN WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN OBSERVING OUTSIDE AND LISTENING TO WHAT WAS GOING ON AROUND US. I OBVIOUSLY THOUGHT THE CAPT HAD UNDERSTOOD THE CLRNC, WHEN APPARENTLY HE HAD NOT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 164558: LAX TWR CLRED US TO CONTINUE TAXIING FOR USE OF FULL LENGTH OF 25R, AND GAVE US OTHER INSTRUCTIONS WHICH I DID NOT COMPREHEND. AS WE APCHED THE TKOF END OF 25R, I ASKED THE COPLT IF WE WERE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD. HE SAID YES.
