Narrative:
I was cleared into the TCA from 7500 to 3500' at 23 mi southwest of jfk. The controller asked me to go to cri VOR at which time I did. I was hand-flying the aircraft because of a malfunction with the trim which knocked out the autoplt. Because of the autoplt problem I had my hands full flying and looking out for traffic and was not able to check ATIS. When the controller told me to go to cri VOR, my mind was then set to land on 13R or 13L from shooting the cri approach into jfk for the last 15 yrs of my career. After passing the cri VOR I had no further instructions on vectors to 22R in which the controller said at that time that was the runway in which I was going to land on. I repeated back 22R, but was looking at 13R as 22R. I asked center where was my traffic I was following, with no reply from center. Then center said to slow to 180 KTS, which led me to believe I was catching my traffic. Then center cleared me to 2500', followed by a 5 second pause with a fast cleared to land on 22R. At that point I was in a position to land on 13R, which I'm still thinking is 22R. I could see no aircraft or vehs on the runway in which I felt it was safe to land. I proceeded to land and about 200' I saw 13R #south, at which time I realized my mistake. I decided to land for it seemed to be the safest action at this point. I taxied off and called ground at which time the tower never had any idea what happened. I realize my mistake and I feel very bad about it, but when they say positive control I wonder what it really means.

Title: SMT LANDS ON RWY 13R VERSUS 22R AT LGA.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED INTO THE TCA FROM 7500 TO 3500' AT 23 MI SW OF JFK. THE CTLR ASKED ME TO GO TO CRI VOR AT WHICH TIME I DID. I WAS HAND-FLYING THE ACFT BECAUSE OF A MALFUNCTION WITH THE TRIM WHICH KNOCKED OUT THE AUTOPLT. BECAUSE OF THE AUTOPLT PROB I HAD MY HANDS FULL FLYING AND LOOKING OUT FOR TFC AND WAS NOT ABLE TO CHK ATIS. WHEN THE CTLR TOLD ME TO GO TO CRI VOR, MY MIND WAS THEN SET TO LAND ON 13R OR 13L FROM SHOOTING THE CRI APCH INTO JFK FOR THE LAST 15 YRS OF MY CAREER. AFTER PASSING THE CRI VOR I HAD NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ON VECTORS TO 22R IN WHICH THE CTLR SAID AT THAT TIME THAT WAS THE RWY IN WHICH I WAS GOING TO LAND ON. I REPEATED BACK 22R, BUT WAS LOOKING AT 13R AS 22R. I ASKED CENTER WHERE WAS MY TFC I WAS FOLLOWING, WITH NO REPLY FROM CENTER. THEN CENTER SAID TO SLOW TO 180 KTS, WHICH LED ME TO BELIEVE I WAS CATCHING MY TFC. THEN CENTER CLRED ME TO 2500', FOLLOWED BY A 5 SEC PAUSE WITH A FAST CLRED TO LAND ON 22R. AT THAT POINT I WAS IN A POS TO LAND ON 13R, WHICH I'M STILL THINKING IS 22R. I COULD SEE NO ACFT OR VEHS ON THE RWY IN WHICH I FELT IT WAS SAFE TO LAND. I PROCEEDED TO LAND AND ABOUT 200' I SAW 13R #S, AT WHICH TIME I REALIZED MY MISTAKE. I DECIDED TO LAND FOR IT SEEMED TO BE THE SAFEST ACTION AT THIS POINT. I TAXIED OFF AND CALLED GND AT WHICH TIME THE TWR NEVER HAD ANY IDEA WHAT HAPPENED. I REALIZE MY MISTAKE AND I FEEL VERY BAD ABOUT IT, BUT WHEN THEY SAY POSITIVE CTL I WONDER WHAT IT REALLY MEANS.
