Narrative:

While in cruise flight 'smoke' began to flow from behind the dash (instrument panel) in the lower right hand corner of the copilot wind screen. An immediate request for a lower altitude was made with chicago center and an explanation of the situation at hand was made. Chicago gave my lower altitudes and directions to the nearest airport (lone rock). They were very helpful and accommodating. The (fire) smoke quit soon after electrical power to the windscreen was shut down. As a precaution to landing was made, passengers deplaned and sent on to their destination in a chartered aircraft, our aircraft was then flown to the nearest aircraft maintenance center for inspection and repairs per request of aircraft manufacturer. The problem was determined to be a short in the wiring to the copilot windscreen caused by wires rubbing on a part of the instrument panel and wearing through causing a short and the subsequent (fire) smoke problem. The coating on the wires to the windscreen and a part of the instrument panel (top, right hand side) were damaged. Although I don't believe any FARS were violated I do want to file this report so that precaution may be taken to prevent a future incident similar to this one. The same thing happened to another aircraft like this one, that our company owned about 7 yrs ago.

Title: CPR SMT GETS A FLT ASSIST RADAR VECTOR TO THE NEAREST ARPT WHEN FIRE SMOKE IS EVIDENT FROM BEHIND INSTRUMENT PANEL.

THEY WERE VERY HELPFUL AND ACCOMMODATING. THE (FIRE) SMOKE QUIT SOON AFTER ELECTRICAL PWR TO THE WINDSCREEN WAS SHUT DOWN. AS A PRECAUTION TO LNDG WAS MADE, PAXS DEPLANED AND SENT ON TO THEIR DEST IN A CHARTERED ACFT, OUR ACFT WAS THEN FLOWN TO THE NEAREST ACFT MAINT CTR FOR INSPECTION AND REPAIRS PER REQUEST OF ACFT MANUFACTURER. THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ANOTHER ACFT LIKE THIS ONE, THAT OUR COMPANY OWNED ABOUT 7 YRS AGO.
