Narrative:
ZZZ line maintenance mechanics were assigned aircraft X. Flight XXXX was delayed. Lead [mechanic] provided us the information of work. We were to accomplish #1 engine fuel filter replacement. [Lead mechanic] provided us the engine fuel filter. We never realized that we incorrectly replaced the wrong filter. We removed and replaced the #1 engine fuel filter instead of the APU filter terminating monitor 29-xx-X-XXXX log required.trusting our lead; whom supplied us the #1 engine filter we never checked or identified the correct job assignment that was required to clear the monitor. APU filter was never changed by [either mechanics]. We completed and signed off #1 engine fuel filter right/right (remove and replace) instead.by not following paperwork assignment of replacing APU filter; we mistakenly followed lead's assignment to change #1 engine filter.
