Narrative:
This concerns a potential problem with similar intxns. Our large transport was en route ind to cun overhead tlh, direct crabi, direct covia, direct cigar. ZJX issued revised routing, 'tlh direct, calup direct cigar, flight plan route.' we read back this clearance as tlh direct calup (with a hard-sound 'C'), etc, and center acknowledged. Clearance was typed into FMC/CDU and we proceeded. Just overhead tlh, center asked to confirm that we were proceeding direct calup (soft 'C' sound) direct cigar. I confirmed spelling, 'C-a-left-U-P.' center said his calup (soft 'C') was 'south-a-left-O-P,' just northwest of pie. After some confusion, we proceeded to salop through cigar. Here's the problem. Calup (with a hard or soft 'C') is just abeam cigar intersection (i.e., with a soft 'C'). I read back with a hard 'C' and controller did not catch. Discussing the clearance, tlh center advised that salop was on J41 northwest of pie. However, salop is actually on V97 (!!) on the low en route chart. It does not appear on high chart. Salop and calup (if read with soft 'C' as being next to cigar) are confusing and should be renamed. Also, ATC should advise when clearance point is on a low vs high chart.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW-CTLR CONFUSION OVER SALOP INTXN AND CALUP (APPARENTLY WITH A SOFT 'C') INTXN.
Narrative: THIS CONCERNS A POTENTIAL PROB WITH SIMILAR INTXNS. OUR LGT WAS ENRTE IND TO CUN OVERHEAD TLH, DIRECT CRABI, DIRECT COVIA, DIRECT CIGAR. ZJX ISSUED REVISED RTING, 'TLH DIRECT, CALUP DIRECT CIGAR, FLT PLAN RTE.' WE READ BACK THIS CLRNC AS TLH DIRECT CALUP (WITH A HARD-SOUND 'C'), ETC, AND CENTER ACKNOWLEDGED. CLRNC WAS TYPED INTO FMC/CDU AND WE PROCEEDED. JUST OVERHEAD TLH, CENTER ASKED TO CONFIRM THAT WE WERE PROCEEDING DIRECT CALUP (SOFT 'C' SOUND) DIRECT CIGAR. I CONFIRMED SPELLING, 'C-A-L-U-P.' CENTER SAID HIS CALUP (SOFT 'C') WAS 'S-A-L-O-P,' JUST NW OF PIE. AFTER SOME CONFUSION, WE PROCEEDED TO SALOP THROUGH CIGAR. HERE'S THE PROB. CALUP (WITH A HARD OR SOFT 'C') IS JUST ABEAM CIGAR INTXN (I.E., WITH A SOFT 'C'). I READ BACK WITH A HARD 'C' AND CTLR DID NOT CATCH. DISCUSSING THE CLRNC, TLH CENTER ADVISED THAT SALOP WAS ON J41 NW OF PIE. HOWEVER, SALOP IS ACTUALLY ON V97 (!!) ON THE LOW ENRTE CHART. IT DOES NOT APPEAR ON HIGH CHART. SALOP AND CALUP (IF READ WITH SOFT 'C' AS BEING NEXT TO CIGAR) ARE CONFUSING AND SHOULD BE RENAMED. ALSO, ATC SHOULD ADVISE WHEN CLRNC POINT IS ON A LOW VS HIGH CHART.
