Narrative:
En route and changed radio frequency and was unable to establish contact with approach. Checked circuit breaker's, microphone and speaker and audio panel couldn't locate problem. Switched radios and was able to establish communication but hearing of controller was very weak. Didn't think it was the volume control because it was preset and I never changed it, so I thought. After getting on the ground I realized I had accidentally bumped the volume control while changing the larger frequency knob. A poor design. Never have volume control and frequency knobs in such a close proximity. You might not think it would be a big deal especially if you were aware of it. But the incident was so insidious and strange that I felt compelled to write this report.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PIC OF A CHARTER FLT TEMPORARILY LOSES COM WITH APCH CTLR ON FREQ CHANGE DUE TO LOW VOLUME ON RECEIVER.
Narrative: ENRTE AND CHANGED RADIO FREQ AND WAS UNABLE TO ESTABLISH CONTACT WITH APCH. CHKED CB'S, MIC AND SPEAKER AND AUDIO PANEL COULDN'T LOCATE PROB. SWITCHED RADIOS AND WAS ABLE TO ESTABLISH COM BUT HEARING OF CTLR WAS VERY WEAK. DIDN'T THINK IT WAS THE VOLUME CTL BECAUSE IT WAS PRESET AND I NEVER CHANGED IT, SO I THOUGHT. AFTER GETTING ON THE GND I REALIZED I HAD ACCIDENTALLY BUMPED THE VOLUME CTL WHILE CHANGING THE LARGER FREQ KNOB. A POOR DESIGN. NEVER HAVE VOLUME CTL AND FREQ KNOBS IN SUCH A CLOSE PROX. YOU MIGHT NOT THINK IT WOULD BE A BIG DEAL ESPECIALLY IF YOU WERE AWARE OF IT. BUT THE INCIDENT WAS SO INSIDIOUS AND STRANGE THAT I FELT COMPELLED TO WRITE THIS RPT.
