Narrative:

Departure control cleared us to delete a crossing restriction and climb to 12000'. A moment later we were cleared to 23000' direct to sjc VOR at our discretion and resume SID at VOR. The next controller told us we should have xed the VOR at 12000' which we did. We were climbing to cross next at or above 14000'. There was a definite communication break down between us and departure on what our altitude clearance was. Suggest a clearance of discretion at VOR altitude 230 maintain all other restriction or just discretion to VOR continue the SID. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information. Reporter stated he was the first officer flying and the first time into sjc airport. Both crew members did not think they did anything wrong, but when the controller questioned the climb above 12000', they weren't sure. This analyst believes and mentioned to the reporter that the controller that questioned their altitude was the center controller and not departure control. Suspect that departure controller issued the climb above 12000', but did not coordination with the next controller (center). No conflict occurred according to the reporter.

Title: LOUPE 7 SID SJC, MISSED CROSSING RESTRICTION VOR.

Narrative: DEP CTL CLRED US TO DELETE A XING RESTRICTION AND CLB TO 12000'. A MOMENT LATER WE WERE CLRED TO 23000' DIRECT TO SJC VOR AT OUR DISCRETION AND RESUME SID AT VOR. THE NEXT CTLR TOLD US WE SHOULD HAVE XED THE VOR AT 12000' WHICH WE DID. WE WERE CLBING TO CROSS NEXT AT OR ABOVE 14000'. THERE WAS A DEFINITE COM BREAK DOWN BTWN US AND DEP ON WHAT OUR ALT CLRNC WAS. SUGGEST A CLRNC OF DISCRETION AT VOR ALT 230 MAINTAIN ALL OTHER RESTRICTION OR JUST DISCRETION TO VOR CONTINUE THE SID. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. RPTR STATED HE WAS THE F/O FLYING AND THE FIRST TIME INTO SJC ARPT. BOTH CREW MEMBERS DID NOT THINK THEY DID ANYTHING WRONG, BUT WHEN THE CTLR QUESTIONED THE CLB ABOVE 12000', THEY WEREN'T SURE. THIS ANALYST BELIEVES AND MENTIONED TO THE RPTR THAT THE CTLR THAT QUESTIONED THEIR ALT WAS THE CTR CTLR AND NOT DEP CTL. SUSPECT THAT DEP CTLR ISSUED THE CLB ABOVE 12000', BUT DID NOT COORD WITH THE NEXT CTLR (CTR). NO CONFLICT OCCURRED ACCORDING TO THE RPTR.
