Narrative:
While on an IFR flight plan and approaching cae with intentions on landing at cub, the cae approach control asked me if I had cub in sight. I said I did, at 11 O'clock. The controller gave me instructions to go from 4000 to 2100' and to call when cancelling IFR. Thinking that the beacon I saw was cub, I cancelled IFR. The controller said to stay on the squawk for advisories. I kept the communication and squawk on cae frequency and kept squawking my IFR #. All the while I was descending to get into the traffic pattern at cub. Upon getting down to 1500' or so, I got closer to the airfield and determined it to be mmt. At this time the controller called me. I said, in response to his call, 'this isn't owens!' the controller said something to the effect of, 'don't you know that white-white-green is a military field?' then he said to do a 180 degree turn and get out of there. In future, I will ask the controller to confirm that the field I am heading toward is the field I intend to land at. Also, I will try to watch for white-white-green although it is difficult to see. The proliferation of flashing white strobes for cellular phone towers makes for a lot of confusion.

Narrative: WHILE ON AN IFR FLT PLAN AND APCHING CAE WITH INTENTIONS ON LNDG AT CUB, THE CAE APCH CTL ASKED ME IF I HAD CUB IN SIGHT. I SAID I DID, AT 11 O'CLOCK. THE CTLR GAVE ME INSTRUCTIONS TO GO FROM 4000 TO 2100' AND TO CALL WHEN CANCELLING IFR. THINKING THAT THE BEACON I SAW WAS CUB, I CANCELLED IFR. THE CTLR SAID TO STAY ON THE SQUAWK FOR ADVISORIES. I KEPT THE COM AND SQUAWK ON CAE FREQ AND KEPT SQUAWKING MY IFR #. ALL THE WHILE I WAS DSNDING TO GET INTO THE TFC PATTERN AT CUB. UPON GETTING DOWN TO 1500' OR SO, I GOT CLOSER TO THE AIRFIELD AND DETERMINED IT TO BE MMT. AT THIS TIME THE CTLR CALLED ME. I SAID, IN RESPONSE TO HIS CALL, 'THIS ISN'T OWENS!' THE CTLR SAID SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT OF, 'DON'T YOU KNOW THAT WHITE-WHITE-GREEN IS A MIL FIELD?' THEN HE SAID TO DO A 180 DEG TURN AND GET OUT OF THERE. IN FUTURE, I WILL ASK THE CTLR TO CONFIRM THAT THE FIELD I AM HDG TOWARD IS THE FIELD I INTEND TO LAND AT. ALSO, I WILL TRY TO WATCH FOR WHITE-WHITE-GREEN ALTHOUGH IT IS DIFFICULT TO SEE. THE PROLIFERATION OF FLASHING WHITE STROBES FOR CELLULAR PHONE TWRS MAKES FOR A LOT OF CONFUSION.
