Narrative:

After being cleared for the visual approach I set 3100 feet in the altitude select and continued our current descent. As the airplane began to level at the selected altitude and with visual confirmation made that we would clear terrain ahead and below the aircraft; we received a GPWS (ground proximity warning system) warning for terrain. The terrain was detected before the GPWS warning. Terrain below the aircraft caused a GPWS warning even though there was visual contact made with the terrain. The autopilot was disengaged in order to react to the GPWS warning but the warning went away immediately after the autopilot was disconnected. Delaying the descent until after passing the terrain would have prevented a warning.
