Narrative:
We were cleared to follow an large transport to runway 26 iah, and were cleared for the approach following that aircraft. As we turned to follow the aircraft the controller said, 'you are turning behind the wrong aircraft--turn right to 250 heading.' we turned and completed a 360 degree turn to resume the approach behind the proper aircraft. It is hard to judge an aircraft type at dusk some distance away. The aircraft we followed was at the position we were told. We shouldn't have advised 'traffic in sight' until we were sure of the type. Next time I won't be in so much of a hurry to turn final.
