We departed 13 (runway) whitestone climb to 5000'. We were handed over to departure. We were on a 175 degree heading. Departure gave us a 'left turn to 340 degrees, climb and maintain 17000'.' I read back to departure, 'left turn to 340 degrees, climb and maintain 17000'.' the captain and I had also confirmed the clearance given by ATC with each other. On the 340 degree heading and at 8000', another voice came on the frequency and said, 'stop climb, traffic 9000', return to 7000'.' we stopped at 8000' and immediately began descent to 7000'. I had told departure we had heard and read back 17000'. WX was hazy at 8000'.
