Narrative:

While on an IFR flight plan in IMC from fnt to yip, ATC assigned an altitude of 4000'. I was the flight instrument supervising an instrument student. The students altitude deviated to 4100'. I told him to correct. Detroit approach advised me they just had an altitude alert on their screens, our mode C showed 4400'. I told ATC we were level at 4100' and asked them if they wanted us to stop altitude squawk. ATC replied negative. Same day I checked the mode C readout with mkg approach. I had an indicated altitude at that time of 2100' MSL and ATC showed the same readout. I notified maintenance at the FBO.
