Narrative:
After pushback, I began calling for taxi. I made 3 calls before we received a, 'stand by.' by this time, the captain began to taxi slowly. There was a lot of confusion on the radio. The captain came on the radio and said, 'XXX, taxiway alpha at gate X, taxi.' the controller responded, 'roger, hold your position.' we immediately stopped. The controller asked, 'who is the medium large transport on taxiway alpha?' we responded, 'XXX.' he responded, 'hold your position,' and repeated, 'who is the medium large transport on taxiway alpha?' we thought it was us, but did not responded because we were confused. During all the confusion I had not noticed we were in a no movement area. After 2 more calls from ground and no response, we again told him that medium large transport was on taxiway alpha from gate Y. We were cleared to taxi. Better taxi signs would have helped in this case.
