Narrative:

Flight departed runway 11R on a 120 degree heading. After flap retraction at approximately 2500', 250 KTS, we encountered a flock of water fowl at 12 O'clock. #1 engine had an immediate loss of power and heavy vibration. We reduced #1 thrust lever to idle and asked departure control for return landing and declared an emergency. I flew the aircraft on the downwind turn and climbed to 4000' while the captain and second officer did the engine failure checklist. We made a passenger announcement to passenger and cabin crew while turning to the downwind. Landing #south were set and we briefed for landing on runway 11R. We made 2 radio calls--one to gate radio and another to maintenance control to advise of our return and condition. At turn to final was started at about 6-7 DME and a normal landing made a 385000# on runway 11R. We cleared the runway and stopped on the ramp to allow emergency and maintenance personnel to inspect the damage prior to continuing to the gate. Another passenger announcement was given to the passenger and cabin crew and then we taxied to the gate and shut down. This flight crew did an excellent job accomplishing their respective duties during this emergency.
