Narrative:
During a night flight from 8n8 to avp I encountered IFR conditions at 2500'. I transitioned to INS, completed a 180 degree turn. Flew to an area approximately 3 mi from point of IMC conditions and descended slightly to re-encounter VFR conditions. My perception was that ceilings were slightly higher than I encountered. Performance may have been deteriorated due to the time of day and the fact that I had been awakened from sleep to complete this flight.
