Narrative:

Flight abc arrived in originated in ZZZ1 and arrived at ZZZ at xa:xaz.upon arriving at ZZZ I checked the brake temps as I always do and saw no temperatures above 3.flight abc (ZZZ- ZZZ2) (in aircraft X) originally blocked out on time at xa:30Z. The flight had a long taxi due a runway change; caused by windy conditions. It felt to me that more power than usual was required to taxi. I thought that this was likely due to the windy conditions from a thunderstorm that had passed.as we arrived at runway xxr the tower cleared us to taxi onto the runway and cleared us for takeoff. We accepted the takeoff clearance. As we turned from the taxiway onto the runway; I noticed the brake temp. Light illuminated. I stopped on the runway to check the brake temps and the left truck was very hot. 5's and 7's. (The right truck was all 0's).we had not yet added power for takeoff. We canceled our takeoff clearance and asked for permission to taxi off the runway. We were given taxi clearance but the aircraft would not move; even with high thrust settings.we told the tower we could not move and we received clearance to stay in position on runway xxr.we shut down both engines; and called maintenance control; who sent out the ZZZ mechanic. He inspected the brakes and found nothing wrong. The mechanic conferred with maintenance control and we all deemed that it was deemed safe for the aircraft to taxi back under its own power when brakes cooled.we taxied back; and wrote up the issue.maintenance checked many components; and worked very hard. The mechanic found an issue with the auto brakes; and deferred the auto brakes. After all maintenance and dispatch paperwork was completed; we pushed again and flew to ZZZ2 uneventfully.upon arriving at ZZZ I checked the brake temps as I always do and saw no temperatures above 3.I do not believe this was an aborted takeoff as we never added take power.I can write a captains report as 'brake failure while aircraft in motion' is a reportable incident latter today if you think it is necessary.flight abc originally blocked out at xa:30z. We returned to the gate at xb:38z.flight abc blocked out a second time at xe:35z departed at xe:42. Landed in ZZZ2 at xf:16 and blocked in at xf:25.
