During hazardous [goods] inspection the first officer noticed a strong chemical smell in the accessible dangerous goods can. He came and got me and I smelled a strong odor as well. The hazardous [material] specialist noticed it too; but we were unable to find the source. We decided the safest course of action was to remove the accessible dangerous goods can.
