Narrative:
After crossing janny on the lynxx 6 arrival we were on radar vectors from bur approach. We were at 6000' heading 210 degrees when the controller called traffic at 10 O'clock, 8500', heading northwest descending. I saw a light twin descending toward us, but it looked like it would pass over us. The controller then said the target was coming down like a rock, 'you are cleared to do whatever you need to.' at this time the twin was in a steep descending left turn and getting close. I turned away in a right turn. The first officer and I idented the aircraft as a twin small transport about 500' away. When I talked to the controller he said our targets had merged on his scope. This incident demonstrates the need for good controllers, which we had, and good radar. At reporting xponders on all aircraft are very important. I think a reliable TCAS system will be very helpful.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: VFR SMT IN HIGH PERFORMANCE MANEUVER CAME IN CLOSE PROX TO ACR IN DESCENT. TRAFFIC ADVISORY GIVEN BY BUR APCH CTLR.
Narrative: AFTER XING JANNY ON THE LYNXX 6 ARR WE WERE ON RADAR VECTORS FROM BUR APCH. WE WERE AT 6000' HDG 210 DEGS WHEN THE CTLR CALLED TFC AT 10 O'CLOCK, 8500', HDG NW DSNDING. I SAW A LIGHT TWIN DSNDING TOWARD US, BUT IT LOOKED LIKE IT WOULD PASS OVER US. THE CTLR THEN SAID THE TARGET WAS COMING DOWN LIKE A ROCK, 'YOU ARE CLRED TO DO WHATEVER YOU NEED TO.' AT THIS TIME THE TWIN WAS IN A STEEP DSNDING LEFT TURN AND GETTING CLOSE. I TURNED AWAY IN A RIGHT TURN. THE F/O AND I IDENTED THE ACFT AS A TWIN SMT ABOUT 500' AWAY. WHEN I TALKED TO THE CTLR HE SAID OUR TARGETS HAD MERGED ON HIS SCOPE. THIS INCIDENT DEMONSTRATES THE NEED FOR GOOD CTLRS, WHICH WE HAD, AND GOOD RADAR. AT RPTING XPONDERS ON ALL ACFT ARE VERY IMPORTANT. I THINK A RELIABLE TCAS SYS WILL BE VERY HELPFUL.
