Narrative:
I was returning from nvd to ojc, reporting inbound with ATIS when I was 10 mi southeast (per pilotage and LORAN). About 2 mins later, small aircraft Y reported inbound from the southwest (his transmission was not too clear, and I did not get his distance). When I was about 2 1/2 mi southeast, the other small aircraft Y reported his position as 5 southeast. Since he had previously reported his position as southwest and sounded rather inept, I looked in all directions, particularly back of me, trying to make visibility contact with an small aircraft reported 3 mi behind me. He was about 30' below me and about 500' from me at my 7 O'clock position. I had descended to pattern altitude (1900' MSL) when I was 7 mi southeast and was in level flight when I saw him. Evasive action was not necessary. The other incorrect position reporting could have led to a serious problem, since neither I nor the tower had accurate information from him.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF SMA Y CREATES AIRBORNE CONFLICT WITH SMA X BY GIVING AN INACCURATE POSITION REPORT APCHING OJC.
Narrative: I WAS RETURNING FROM NVD TO OJC, RPTING INBND WITH ATIS WHEN I WAS 10 MI SE (PER PILOTAGE AND LORAN). ABOUT 2 MINS LATER, SMA Y RPTED INBND FROM THE SW (HIS XMISSION WAS NOT TOO CLR, AND I DID NOT GET HIS DISTANCE). WHEN I WAS ABOUT 2 1/2 MI SE, THE OTHER SMA Y RPTED HIS POS AS 5 SE. SINCE HE HAD PREVIOUSLY RPTED HIS POS AS SW AND SOUNDED RATHER INEPT, I LOOKED IN ALL DIRECTIONS, PARTICULARLY BACK OF ME, TRYING TO MAKE VIS CONTACT WITH AN SMA RPTED 3 MI BEHIND ME. HE WAS ABOUT 30' BELOW ME AND ABOUT 500' FROM ME AT MY 7 O'CLOCK POS. I HAD DSNDED TO PATTERN ALT (1900' MSL) WHEN I WAS 7 MI SE AND WAS IN LEVEL FLT WHEN I SAW HIM. EVASIVE ACTION WAS NOT NECESSARY. THE OTHER INCORRECT POS RPTING COULD HAVE LED TO A SERIOUS PROB, SINCE NEITHER I NOR THE TWR HAD ACCURATE INFO FROM HIM.
