Narrative:

We were cleared for takeoff runway 27L at ord. Our clearance was to turn left to a heading of 220 degrees, climb to an altitude of 5000'. While in the turn, we were told to contact departure control. At about the same time, we received a 'traffic, traffic' alert from our TCAS unit. The 3 crew members tried to establish visibility contact, but due to aircraft attitude (takeoff) and outside visibility conditions were unable to do so. Therefore, referring back to TCAS indicator, we deviated left of assigned heading, as that appeared to be the best course of avoidance.
