Narrative:
While in a climb from VFR conditions at 500' along the east river of ny to 2000' IFR, the helicopter experienced a main transmission chip light while passing through 1000'. I, as the captain, did the proper emergency checklist and found that the transmission chip light was still indicating a problem. I declared an emergency with ny departure and received immediate vectors for final and ILS runway 22 at lga. We executed the approach and landed west/O incident. ATC did a good job.
