Narrative:
While en route sbn-stl, we had deviated around several cells when we requested direct cap VOR for WX. Center replied unable, to proceed direct cmz. We advised we were unable to do that, so he cleared us direct robinson VOR to hold. Looking at radar, robinson was just on the edge of the WX. As we entered the hold, I was redetermining fuel and alternates. The aircraft entered moderate turbulence and my attention also focused on the radar screen and getting WX updates from company. During that time period I had flown past the VOR and was on the opposite side by 7 mi. Almost as soon as I noticed it, so did center. We informed them we were correcting. Things would have been much less hectic if we had been told to expect the hold or been advised to slow. Everything came together at once, and even when we got turn back to the VOR, we never even finished 1 circuit before being cleared to continue. During this time, the first officer, because of low experience in WX flying, was frightened and less than helpful. With no autoplts installed on our aircraft, the workload at these times is extremely high.

Title: COMMUTER OVERFLIES VOR WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ENTER HOLDING PATTERN.
Narrative: WHILE ENRTE SBN-STL, WE HAD DEVIATED AROUND SEVERAL CELLS WHEN WE REQUESTED DIRECT CAP VOR FOR WX. CENTER REPLIED UNABLE, TO PROCEED DIRECT CMZ. WE ADVISED WE WERE UNABLE TO DO THAT, SO HE CLRED US DIRECT ROBINSON VOR TO HOLD. LOOKING AT RADAR, ROBINSON WAS JUST ON THE EDGE OF THE WX. AS WE ENTERED THE HOLD, I WAS REDETERMINING FUEL AND ALTERNATES. THE ACFT ENTERED MODERATE TURB AND MY ATTN ALSO FOCUSED ON THE RADAR SCREEN AND GETTING WX UPDATES FROM COMPANY. EVERYTHING CAME TOGETHER AT ONCE, AND EVEN WHEN WE GOT TURN BACK TO THE VOR, WE NEVER EVEN FINISHED 1 CIRCUIT BEFORE BEING CLRED TO CONTINUE. DURING THIS TIME, THE F/O, BECAUSE OF LOW EXPERIENCE IN WX FLYING, WAS FRIGHTENED AND LESS THAN HELPFUL. WITH NO AUTOPLTS INSTALLED ON OUR ACFT, THE WORKLOAD AT THESE TIMES IS EXTREMELY HIGH.
