Narrative:

We were on an IFR cross country, flying at 6000 ft and had just been handed off to point mugu center. They vectored us down to 5000 ft. After we leveled off I noticed the odor of an electrical fire. Immediately I told my student to contact center and tell them we were shutting down all electrical, and that we would continue the approach into santa barbara. At that time my student saw fire behind my right rudder pedal. Off our left wing we saw point mugu NAS. We made an emergency descent after closing all the vents. At 2000 ft left downwind abeam the #'south of 03 I had my student slow the plane to V1E. We put down the gear, though I was unsure whether it had locked into position. Since my student was handling the situation well and my rudder pedal was on fire, I told him that he had the aircraft while I watched for traffic. When we rolled out on final at approximately 500 ft I pulled the mixture and shut down the engine. It was impossible to see out due to the smoke in the cabin. It was also hard to breath in the cockpit so we opened the doors both for the oxygen and in case we had a hard landing so if the airframe wrinkled we could still immediately exit the airplane. We touched down at approximately 120 KTS, therefore we had little ability to brake and at about 100 KTS we veered to the left of the runway. My student had his window opened slightly so he could see. Then we hit a runway light which separated our nose gear from the aircraft. Shortly after our main gear failed, and we slid to a stop within approximately 50 ft. At this time I moved my seat forward to let the rear passenger exit the aircraft, and my student and I followed shortly after. Rescue crews were on the scene within 1 min.

Title: GA SMA INFLT FIRE FOLLOWED BY EMER LNDG AT MIL ARPT WHERE THE PLT LOST CTL AND WIPED OUT THE GEAR.

Narrative: WE WERE ON AN IFR CROSS COUNTRY, FLYING AT 6000 FT AND HAD JUST BEEN HANDED OFF TO POINT MUGU CENTER. THEY VECTORED US DOWN TO 5000 FT. AFTER WE LEVELED OFF I NOTICED THE ODOR OF AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. IMMEDIATELY I TOLD MY STUDENT TO CONTACT CENTER AND TELL THEM WE WERE SHUTTING DOWN ALL ELECTRICAL, AND THAT WE WOULD CONTINUE THE APCH INTO SANTA BARBARA. AT THAT TIME MY STUDENT SAW FIRE BEHIND MY R RUDDER PEDAL. OFF OUR L WING WE SAW POINT MUGU NAS. WE MADE AN EMER DSCNT AFTER CLOSING ALL THE VENTS. AT 2000 FT L DOWNWIND ABEAM THE #'S OF 03 I HAD MY STUDENT SLOW THE PLANE TO V1E. WE PUT DOWN THE GEAR, THOUGH I WAS UNSURE WHETHER IT HAD LOCKED INTO POS. SINCE MY STUDENT WAS HANDLING THE SITUATION WELL AND MY RUDDER PEDAL WAS ON FIRE, I TOLD HIM THAT HE HAD THE ACFT WHILE I WATCHED FOR TFC. WHEN WE ROLLED OUT ON FINAL AT APPROX 500 FT I PULLED THE MIXTURE AND SHUT DOWN THE ENG. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE OUT DUE TO THE SMOKE IN THE CABIN. IT WAS ALSO HARD TO BREATH IN THE COCKPIT SO WE OPENED THE DOORS BOTH FOR THE OXYGEN AND IN CASE WE HAD A HARD LNDG SO IF THE AIRFRAME WRINKLED WE COULD STILL IMMEDIATELY EXIT THE AIRPLANE. WE TOUCHED DOWN AT APPROX 120 KTS, THEREFORE WE HAD LITTLE ABILITY TO BRAKE AND AT ABOUT 100 KTS WE VEERED TO THE L OF THE RWY. MY STUDENT HAD HIS WINDOW OPENED SLIGHTLY SO HE COULD SEE. THEN WE HIT A RWY LIGHT WHICH SEPARATED OUR NOSE GEAR FROM THE ACFT. SHORTLY AFTER OUR MAIN GEAR FAILED, AND WE SLID TO A STOP WITHIN APPROX 50 FT. AT THIS TIME I MOVED MY SEAT FORWARD TO LET THE REAR PAX EXIT THE ACFT, AND MY STUDENT AND I FOLLOWED SHORTLY AFTER. RESCUE CREWS WERE ON THE SCENE WITHIN 1 MIN.
