Narrative:
On flight from clt-ord. Unknown to pilot crew, clt hornet 2 departure was changed to hornet 3 on this day. Read back clearance for a sandy transition which no longer existed. Clearance never corrected for a sadie transition on readback. Sandy was the clt 286 degree right; sadie is the clt 347 degree right. After takeoff (first officer flying) departure directed us to intercept sadie. Captain read back sandy. Departure corrected sadie. Captain replied sandy. (They sound alike with the controller's southern accent). First officer turned the aircraft to about 260 degree heading after being told to join the sadie transition. In middle of turn from 330 degrees to 260 degrees, controller said, 'there is some confusion. Turn to 010 degrees to fly out the control 347 radial.' factors: commercial chart updates were issued with change after crew had departed home base on a 4 day trip. FAA should have 5 or more days lead time for an effective change date so the above factor would not occur. Clt should have a note on the ATIS warning of the SID change with similar sounding departure radials.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MG DEPARTING CLT FLIES HORNET 2 SID INSTEAD OF NEW HORNET 3 SID.
Narrative: ON FLT FROM CLT-ORD. UNKNOWN TO PLT CREW, CLT HORNET 2 DEP WAS CHANGED TO HORNET 3 ON THIS DAY. READ BACK CLRNC FOR A SANDY TRANSITION WHICH NO LONGER EXISTED. CLRNC NEVER CORRECTED FOR A SADIE TRANSITION ON READBACK. SANDY WAS THE CLT 286 DEG R; SADIE IS THE CLT 347 DEG R. AFTER TKOF (F/O FLYING) DEP DIRECTED US TO INTERCEPT SADIE. CAPT READ BACK SANDY. DEP CORRECTED SADIE. CAPT REPLIED SANDY. (THEY SOUND ALIKE WITH THE CTLR'S SOUTHERN ACCENT). F/O TURNED THE ACFT TO ABOUT 260 DEG HDG AFTER BEING TOLD TO JOIN THE SADIE TRANSITION. IN MIDDLE OF TURN FROM 330 DEGS TO 260 DEGS, CTLR SAID, 'THERE IS SOME CONFUSION. TURN TO 010 DEGS TO FLY OUT THE CTL 347 RADIAL.' FACTORS: COMMERCIAL CHART UPDATES WERE ISSUED WITH CHANGE AFTER CREW HAD DEPARTED HOME BASE ON A 4 DAY TRIP. FAA SHOULD HAVE 5 OR MORE DAYS LEAD TIME FOR AN EFFECTIVE CHANGE DATE SO THE ABOVE FACTOR WOULD NOT OCCUR. CLT SHOULD HAVE A NOTE ON THE ATIS WARNING OF THE SID CHANGE WITH SIMILAR SOUNDING DEP RADIALS.
