Low fuel warning light assembly malfunctioned. Unit replaced with better design. Hour meter moved to location where it can readily be seen by pilot--an additional remedy. Successful autorotation performed to highway 16A. No injuries or property damage occurred.

Title: FUEL STARVATION IN A ROTARY WINGED ACFT EVOLVES INTO AN OFF ARPT LNDG.
Narrative: LOW FUEL WARNING LIGHT ASSEMBLY MALFUNCTIONED. UNIT REPLACED WITH BETTER DESIGN. HOUR METER MOVED TO LOCATION WHERE IT CAN READILY BE SEEN BY PLT--AN ADDITIONAL REMEDY. SUCCESSFUL AUTOROTATION PERFORMED TO HWY 16A. NO INJURIES OR PROPERTY DAMAGE OCCURRED.
