Narrative:
First day with new hire first officer. Cockpit observer was on jumpseat. First infraction occurred on the wraps 5 STAR when first officer missed crossing restriction over turlo intersection by 1000'. Next infraction occurred later on same STAR when first officer flew the wrong right out of sac. ATC issued a vector to rejoin the proper course. Both incidents occurred while my attention was diverted to other duties. I feel that the first officer was preoccupied with sharing new hire tips to the cockpit observer, who is also a new hire in initial training. Neither deviation was gross, but enough to warrant my concern for possible violation. A lecture from myself to my first officer is forthcoming on the subject of cockpit distrs. Also, greater vigilance on my part would help to reduce such occurrences.
