Narrative:
The aircraft had overnighted at newark. The first officer conducted a normal preflight exterior inspection of the aircraft. In addition a mechanic came to the cockpit and reported that he had done a walkaround of the aircraft and that everything was normal. Prior to pushback the door lights were checked out as per the checklist. During the taxi check the recall was pushed and no lights came on. After takeoff the aircraft would not pressurize. We leveled off at 6000 ft to investigate and shortly thereafter the master caution and doors light came on. There were no door lights 'on' on the overhead panel so I pressed each individual light and the 'equipment' door light stayed on. We returned to ewr and made an uneventful landing. No fuel was dumped and the aircraft was below landing weight. We did not declare an emergency. Upon arrival at ewr the electronic equipment access door was found to be open. Maintenance was unable to find any fault in the door light system.
