Air Traffic Incident | Pilot Deviation |
Narrative:
Copilot and I both heard clearance to cross runway 9R. Copilot read back clearance. I looked for traffic and saw widebody transport on final. Thought it was a little closer than normal but adequate room to cross runway. Crossed runway and contacted ground as requested in crossing clearance. At that point was cleared to gate. Taxiing in, ground requested us to call them on the phone. During subsequent phone call ground informed me that the crossing clearance was for another flight with similar sounding flight #. I explained our reason for crossing and the readback. In the future I will listen much closer! I am still not sure that we did not hear it correct and the controller use the wrong flight #. Next time if it sounds right but doesn't look right, I will not second guess the controller and will hold a conservative position until reconfirmed. Contributors to incident: long duty day and very busy radio frequency (hard to break in to continuous controller stream of instructions).

Title: TWR CTLR ALLEGED FLT TOOK CLRNC MEANT FOR SIMILAR IDENT AND CROSSED RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: COPLT AND I BOTH HEARD CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 9R. COPLT READ BACK CLRNC. I LOOKED FOR TFC AND SAW WDB ON FINAL. THOUGHT IT WAS A LITTLE CLOSER THAN NORMAL BUT ADEQUATE ROOM TO CROSS RWY. CROSSED RWY AND CONTACTED GND AS REQUESTED IN XING CLRNC. AT THAT POINT WAS CLRED TO GATE. TAXIING IN, GND REQUESTED US TO CALL THEM ON THE PHONE. DURING SUBSEQUENT PHONE CALL GND INFORMED ME THAT THE XING CLRNC WAS FOR ANOTHER FLT WITH SIMILAR SOUNDING FLT #. I EXPLAINED OUR REASON FOR XING AND THE READBACK. IN THE FUTURE I WILL LISTEN MUCH CLOSER! I AM STILL NOT SURE THAT WE DID NOT HEAR IT CORRECT AND THE CTLR USE THE WRONG FLT #. NEXT TIME IF IT SOUNDS RIGHT BUT DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT, I WILL NOT SECOND GUESS THE CTLR AND WILL HOLD A CONSERVATIVE POS UNTIL RECONFIRMED. CONTRIBUTORS TO INCIDENT: LONG DUTY DAY AND VERY BUSY RADIO FREQ (HARD TO BREAK IN TO CONTINUOUS CTLR STREAM OF INSTRUCTIONS).
