Narrative:

On STAR (bucks one) to phl at 8000, cleared to 6000 ft. Target popped up on TCAS screen 3-4 mi ahead and below us (climbing). TCAS issued traffic advisory followed shortly by resolution advisory to climb. Intruder was 600 ft below and 1 mi horizontal when we climbed to 8300 ft. At 8300 ft, TCAS issued a 'clear of conflict'. At this point we informed ATC of deviation, altitude, and began descent to 6000 ft. Never saw intruder aircraft. P.south. I think TCAS is an excellent system.
