Narrative:
Advised approach controller #1 and #2 that would cancel IFR as soon as possible on approach and proceed to nearby field VFR. Approach switched me to tower just after cancelling IFR. Advised tower cancelling IFR, proceeding VFR to new destination. Tower insisted IFR at field. VFR at my position. Recontacted approach for flight following to nearby field (about 10 mi). No traffic conflicts. May have been better to shoot a missed approach procedure to avoid confusion.

Title: CANCELED IFR THROUGH THE TWR WHEN FIELD STILL IN IMC CONDITIONS.
Narrative: ADVISED APCH CTLR #1 AND #2 THAT WOULD CANCEL IFR ASAP ON APCH AND PROCEED TO NEARBY FIELD VFR. APCH SWITCHED ME TO TWR JUST AFTER CANCELLING IFR. ADVISED TWR CANCELLING IFR, PROCEEDING VFR TO NEW DEST. TWR INSISTED IFR AT FIELD. VFR AT MY POS. RECONTACTED APCH FOR FLT FOLLOWING TO NEARBY FIELD (ABOUT 10 MI). NO TFC CONFLICTS. MAY HAVE BEEN BETTER TO SHOOT A MISSED APCH PROC TO AVOID CONFUSION.
