Narrative:
After the completion of the takeoff checklist I requested and was granted takeoff clearance. In my acknowledgement of the takeoff clearance I asked for 15 seconds so that I could find my sunglasses which were in my coat pocket behind me. During this distraction the airplane's brakes failed to hold and the left propeller struck a part of a taxi light. The damage to the propeller exceeded the limits for recondition and a new blade was required. In the future it would be wise to note, that when a switch is set or a lever pulled, the results actually take place.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PROP STRIKE ON RWY LIGHT.
Narrative: AFTER THE COMPLETION OF THE TKOF CHKLIST I REQUESTED AND WAS GRANTED TKOF CLRNC. IN MY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE TKOF CLRNC I ASKED FOR 15 SECONDS SO THAT I COULD FIND MY SUNGLASSES WHICH WERE IN MY COAT POCKET BEHIND ME. DURING THIS DISTR THE AIRPLANE'S BRAKES FAILED TO HOLD AND THE LEFT PROP STRUCK A PART OF A TAXI LIGHT. THE DAMAGE TO THE PROP EXCEEDED THE LIMITS FOR RECONDITION AND A NEW BLADE WAS REQUIRED. IN THE FUTURE IT WOULD BE WISE TO NOTE, THAT WHEN A SWITCH IS SET OR A LEVER PULLED, THE RESULTS ACTUALLY TAKE PLACE.
