Narrative:
Aircraft was being vectored for visual approach to runway 22L at ewr. Clearance was given by new york approach to descend to 5000 ft from 6000 ft. Aircraft was descended through 'cleared to' altitude of 5000 ft to 4500 ft. Approach then cleared aircraft to 4000 ft. This was the third leg of the duty period. The first leg was an 'all nighter' den to ewr. From ewr we flew to dca and were on our way back to ewr. We had been up all night and were on our third leg. I feel this was the primary factor involved. Crew fatigue often leads to errors.
