Narrative:
After being cleared for takeoff on runway 23 by greensboro tower, we were forced to initiate an abort, after military helicopter entered the runway. This incident occurred on takeoff roll. We had previously been cleared into position and hold by the tower. After receiving a release from center the tower cleared us for takeoff on runway 23 and to fly runway heading, which we acknowledged. Takeoff power was set and as our airspeed reached approximately 90 KTS, a military helicopter entered the taxiway from taxiway kilo. We immediately initiated an abort and during the abort we asked the tower about the helicopter on the runway. His reply was 'air carrier X abort.' we were just about stopped by intersection lima but proceeded on down to intersection microphone and exited the runway. There were no problems other than the abort and we checked our brake cooling chart and taxied back to the departure end of 23. This, however, could have been a lot more serious if the helicopter had waited till we had built up considerably more speed before encroaching on the runway. Both me and the captain heard the tower tell the helicopters (there were 2, but only 1 came into the runway) to hold short.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MIL HELI UNAUTHORIZED RWY ENTRY HAD LTSS FROM ACR X. PLTDEV.
Narrative: AFTER BEING CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 23 BY GREENSBORO TWR, WE WERE FORCED TO INITIATE AN ABORT, AFTER MIL HELI ENTERED THE RWY. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED ON TKOF ROLL. WE HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD BY THE TWR. AFTER RECEIVING A RELEASE FROM CENTER THE TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF ON RWY 23 AND TO FLY RWY HDG, WHICH WE ACKNOWLEDGED. TKOF PWR WAS SET AND AS OUR AIRSPD REACHED APPROX 90 KTS, A MIL HELI ENTERED THE TAXIWAY FROM TAXIWAY KILO. WE IMMEDIATELY INITIATED AN ABORT AND DURING THE ABORT WE ASKED THE TWR ABOUT THE HELI ON THE RWY. HIS REPLY WAS 'ACR X ABORT.' WE WERE JUST ABOUT STOPPED BY INTXN LIMA BUT PROCEEDED ON DOWN TO INTXN MIKE AND EXITED THE RWY. THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS OTHER THAN THE ABORT AND WE CHKED OUR BRAKE COOLING CHART AND TAXIED BACK TO THE DEP END OF 23. THIS, HOWEVER, COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT MORE SERIOUS IF THE HELI HAD WAITED TILL WE HAD BUILT UP CONSIDERABLY MORE SPD BEFORE ENCROACHING ON THE RWY. BOTH ME AND THE CAPT HEARD THE TWR TELL THE HELIS (THERE WERE 2, BUT ONLY 1 CAME INTO THE RWY) TO HOLD SHORT.
