Narrative:

While level at 6000 ft MSL, on a heading to intercept the oakland, ca, runway 29 ILS, we received a TCASII warning of a traffic conflict. After 5-10 seconds TCASII mandated an immediate climb. We initiated a climb and informed bay approach control. Passing 6300 we saw the twin engine traffic level at 5500 ft MSL going beneath us. We stopped climbing at 6900 ft MSL and then proceeded back down to our assigned altitude and then executed the approach. Later, after talking with approach on the telephone, the twin was restr to 5500 ft MSL and had us in sight during the entire occurrence. Approach never alerted us to conflicting traffic.
